In addition to helping us show the world our topics of interest, each Global Voices Summit is a place for personal meetings between those who are a part of the community. Each meeting, is an opportunity for new ideas, and help sustain and energize the global network that gives life to Global Voices in a variety of languages. It is something that all community members look forward to, both those who have attended a previous meeting, and those who are going for the first time.

As Adriana from Venezuela, one of our first Global Voices Spanish translators, says: “While not everything has been bytes and virtual contact since 2006, the Citizen Media Summit is no less than a meeting between worldwide GV contributors, as well as bloggers, journalists and technologists, to share and discuss about the experience and evolution of citizen media, in addition of contributing ideas and projects that enrich the community and the initiative for which GV has worked all this years…” Adriana is attending her first Summit and affirms that: “I’m happy to meet a good part of the GV workforce, admirable people, with an overwhelming perseverance and will.“

Laura from Venezuela initially was a Global Voices Spanish translator and is now an author for the site in English. She attended the summit in Budapest in 2008, and speaks of how interesting it will be for the Global Voices workforce to meet in a city with Chile’s characteristics: “Now that we will meet in Santiago de Chile, one of the worlds capital of technological innovation dedicated to the education, and as Venezuela’s linguistic sister, my expectations are huge.“

She also remembers: “If any time I had a proof of the benefits on information and experiences exchange between people from different countries, origins and customs, this was, undoubtedly, during the week I saw this community interacting. And not only that, there were also the days in which we discussed about the importance of defending the speech rights and the freedom of opinion in Internet and we shared experiences in which technology give a hand to the development of communities hidden to a big part of the world’s eyes.“

Gabriela from Peru is the most prolific Global Voices Spanish translator. She speaks about her expectations saying that: “It will be the perfect occasion to put a face to name and voice to the tiny photos I always see beside the names. The sensation of having in front of me those who I only know by their words will be multiplied. “

Catalina from Colombia started her relationship with Global Voices as member of the HiperBarrio project of Rising Voices, and then additionally became an author for our main site. She was also in Budapest for the 2008 Summit: “It will be great to meet the people I met on that occasion again, and also meet others whom I have only known through their posts.

As you can see, this meeting – that will be held in Santiago, Chile on May 6-7 promises to be full of debates, constructive discussion, and will be a total celebration of the world's efforts to speak and to be heard. It will demonstrate that Global Voices ambitions stretch further than an informative web site, to sustaining a vibrant virtual community.

Cuatro chicas del equipo latinoamericano

Cada cumbre de Global Voices, además de servir para mostrar al mundo los temas de discusión que nos interesan y planear nuestros siguientes pasos, es un espacio para el encuentro presencial de quienes hacen parte de esta comunidad. Cada encuentro, la oportunidad para que desde una significativa variedad de lenguas y culturas se dé el génesis de nuevas ideas y formas de mantener una red global que dé vida, y vía libre, al potencial ya existente en Global Voices; es algo que todos los miembros de esta comunidad esperamos con muchas ansias, tanto los que ya hemos asistido a algún encuentro previo, como los que van por primera vez.

Como lo expresa Adriana, de Venezuela, una de nuestras primeras traductoras para Global Voices en español:  Para que no todo quede entre bytes y contactos virtuales, desde 2006 se organiza la bienal Citizen Media Summit, que no es otra cosa que un encuentro entre miembros de GV de todo el mundo, además de bloggers, periodistas y tecnólogos, para compartir y discutir sobre la experiencia y evolución de los medios ciudadanos, además de aportar ideas y proyectos que enriquezcan a la comunidad y la iniciativa por la que GV ha trabajado todos estos años… Ella, que por primera vez asistirá a una cumbre, afirma que: me alegra que por fin conoceré a buena parte del tren de trabajo de GV, gente admirable y con una voluntad y constancia abrumadoras.

De otra parte, Laura, también de Venezuela, quien inicialmente fue traductora para Global Voices en español y ahora es autora para el sitio en Inglés, y participó en la Cumbre que se realizó en Budapest durante 2008, habla de lo interesante que será el que el equipo humano de Global Voices se encuentre en una ciudad con las características de Chile: Ahora que nos encontraremos en Santiago de Chile, una de las capitales mundiales de la innovación tecnológica dedicada a la educación y una hermana lingüística de Venezuela mis expectativas son enormes.

Ella además recuerda: Si alguna vez tuve prueba de los beneficios que vienen con los intercambios de información y de experiencias de gentes de diferentes tierras, costumbres y orígenes, esto fue, sin duda, durante la semana en la que ví interactuar a esta comunidad. Y no sólo eso, fueron también días en los que se discutió sobre la importancia de defender el derecho a la expresión y a la libertad de opinión en Internet y se compartieron experiencias en la que la tecnología le dio la mano al avance y al desarrollo en comunidades escondidas a los ojos de buena parte del mundo.

Gabriela, de Perú, nuestra más prolífica traductora en Global Voices en Español, habla de sus expectativas expresando que: Será la ocasión perfecta para ponerle cara a los nombres y voz a las minúsculas fotos que veo siempre al lado de los nombres. Se multiplicará por no sé cuántas veces la sensación increíble de tener delante de mí a quienes solamente conozco por sus palabras.

Para Catalina, de Colombia, quien empezó su relación con Global Voices como participante del Proyecto HiperBarrio de Rising Voices y luego adicionalmente se convirtió también en autora para nuestra págian principal, y al igual que Laura estuvo en Budapest en 2008: tendrá su encanto el poder encontrarme nuevamente con quienes conocí en aquella ocasión y encontrarse con otros a quienes me he acercado a través de sus posts.

Como ven, este nuevo espacio de reunión -que se llevará a cabo en Chile durante los días 6 y 7 de mayo- promete estar pleno de debates, construcción y ser una fiesta total en pro de que el mundo hable y pueda ser escuchado, que demostrará que Global Voices va más allá de ser sólamente un sitio informativo y es una vibrante comunidad virtual.
