The Breaking Borders Award is a new prize created by Google and Global Voices and supported by Thomson Reuters to honor outstanding web projects initiated by individuals or groups that demonstrate courage, energy and resourcefulness in using the Internet to promote freedom of expression.

The work of the winners in three categories will be presented during the Global Voices Summit in Santiago, Chile.

The Breaking Borders Award is open to people of all nationalities. Winners will be selected by a panel of experts in the field of freedom of expression. A cash prize of $10,000 will be awarded in each of three areas:

1. Advocacy, given to an activist or group that has used online tools to promote free expression or encourage political change
2. Technology, given to an individual or group that has created an important tool that enables free expression and expands access to information
3. Policy, given to a policy maker, government official or NGO leader who has made a notable contribution in the field

Nominations for and additional information about the Breaking Borders Award can be submitted at http://breakingborders.net and close on February 15, 2010.

Premio Rompiendo Fronteras

El Premio Rompiendo Fronteras es un nuevo galardón creado por Google y Global Voices y apoyado por Thomson Reuters para honrar a los proyectos web extraordinarios iniciados por individuos o grupos que demuestren valor, energía e ingenio en utilizar Internet para promover la libertad de expresión.

El trabajo de los ganadores en tres diferentes categorías será presentado durante la Conferencia de Global Voices en Santiago, Chile.

El Premio Rompiendo Fronteras está abierto para personas de cualquier nacionalidad. Los ganadores serán seleccionados por un panel de expertos en el cambo de libertad de expresión. Un premio en efectivo de 10 000 USD será dado en cada una de las tres áreas:

1. Promoción, otorgado a un activista o grupo que haya utilizado herramientas en línea para promover la libertad de expresión o alentar un cambio político.

2. Tecnología, otorgado a un individuo o grupo que haya creado una herramienta importante que permita la libre expresión y amplíe el acceso a la información.

3. Políticas, entregada a un legislador, funcionario público o líder de una ONG que haya hecho una notable contribución en el campo.

Las nominaciones para el Premio Rompiendo Fronteras pueden ser presentadas en http://www.breakingborders.net y se cierran el 15 de febrero del 2010.
